My research process
To me, Africa has always seemed like a mysterious continent that I have wanted to visit. It is filled with beautiful scenery as well as an interesting and diverse heritage that is exciting to learn about.
A few years ago, my grandparents traveled to Kenya with a medical mission group to help tend to children in need. They went to an orphanage and worked there for two weeks to assist children with health needs. This was because the medical facilities in this region were very crude, and there weren't many skilled doctors that were able to help the people. When they returned, I became very interested in everything they did in Africa, as well as what life was like in Kenya. This began my present love for helping people.
I knew that there were a lot of children in need throughout Africa, but after doing some research, I learned about how wars are affecting the lives of children. I decided that this was a topic that needed to be broadcast in order to catch the attention of others. The reason why I chose children in Nigeria specifically is because this country is currently where a larger amount of child soldiers is being seen. Also, I studied Nigeria in my anatomy class, the topic being about malnutrition in children. With the experience my grandparents had in Africa along with knowledge I had learned from how poorly children are being treated, I knew that I wanted to go more in depth in my studies of child soldiers.

Before I began this project, I anticipated that Civil wars in Western Africa put children at risk of future health problems, and they impacted the amount of education received. This led my research question to ask these things, and my research essay went more in depth for these claims. I expected to find a lot of information about how children are losing educational privileges due to possible dangers that could be faced, like possible kidnappings and bombings. With a little research, I found this assumption to be entirely true. I also expected to find that the main health problems of children would be minor injuries, but I learned that they are at a lot more health risks than just a couple injuries. The articles that were most reliable focused mainly on the group Boko Haram, a group who kills and hurts people with violent attacks. This became the base for my essay, and all of the information I gathered circled around this dangerous group. However, my opposition was separate from this dangerous group because it had nothing to do with Boko Haram; adults only believed that their lives were far worse than the lives of children during these wars.
Some complications took place during my research, including that a lot of articles found were from past years. There were a lot more articles from previous years than there were from present day, probably because nothing has changed. Also, a lot of articles talking about child soldiers didn't have anything to do with Nigeria. As of right now, no new information has been expressed about children and how Nigerian civil wars affect them.
